Why does an apparently sane and respectable person decide to embark on such a seemingly bizarre quest? If you are reading this web page there's a good chance you know already. Ever since I got back into video games as an adult I've had a yearning to play the old arcade classics. While imitations abound there is nothing like the real thing. One day I discovered MAME, loaded it with some ROMs onto my PC, typed "c:/mame/mame galaga" at the prompt and saw this classic game exactly as I remembered. I swear I almost cried.
There is something about the games you played as a youth in an arcade that can't be reproduced. I don't know if it wires your brain chemistry, Pavlov style, to induce adrenalin when you hear the music and read "PLAYER 1" on the screen, but whatever it is I get a kick out of it.
It has become clear to me fairly quickly that a gamepad on a PC is vastly, catastrophically inferior to the real arcade experience. Luckily I have discovered a community of like minded people that stretches across several continents linked by the internet.
I'm an Australian, so I'm aiming to help provide a bit of local info for other Aussies who are similarly afflicted. There is hope. From this page you should be able to find enough info to complete a MAME cabinet project from scratch in Australia.
Join me now in the chronicle of my experience. If you don't know what MAME is or what the hell I'm talking about maybe try the links page and get up to speed.
